Every time you boot up your Xbox Series X console, you’ll see this little nugget. This seven second animation is jam-packed with nuanced lens flare love, fine-tuned line animation, and backed by an exhaustive study into the lineage behind the “orb.”

Currently clocking in with 2.5 million YouTube views…with millions more seeing every time this hit the power button.

xbox 20th anniversary identity package

To commemorate Xbox's 20th Anniversary, the team and I at Ayzenberg were tasked with creating an animated identity package for this significant milestone. Leaning back into the flare effect used in the boot-up screen (shown above), my idea was to transform it into a metaphorical tachometer that encircles the orb. As the flare sweeps across, it unveils the accumulation of years, bookending the period from 2001 to 2021, while also hinting at the promising future ahead.

Although these brief animations may seem fleeting at first glance, they are the result of countless hours devoted to perfecting each frame.
